Transforming Education
The Institute for Learning (IFL) at the University of Pittsburgh’s Learning Research Development Center is dedicated to transforming educational practices through the power of learning science. Founded on the pioneering work of cognitive psychologist Lauren Resnick in 1995, we serve as a vital bridge, connecting rigorous research on how people learn with the everyday realities of classrooms and schools.
Our Core Belief
We believe that equity is not just an ideal, but a necessity. Every student, regardless of background or zip code, has the capacity for high achievement when provided with equitable, rigorous opportunities and the right instructional supports.
What Drives Us
At the heart of the IFL is a deep commitment to equity and excellence in education. We are driven by the understanding that research-backed strategies, when implemented effectively, can unlock the potential within each student. We work collaboratively with educators and leaders at all levels to:
- Elevate Instruction: We champion instructional approaches that engage students in deep thinking and meaningful learning.
- Empower Educators: We provide educators with the tools, frameworks, and professional learning experiences needed to continuously refine their practice.
- Cultivate Leadership: We support school and district leaders in creating environments that prioritize and foster instructional improvement.
- Facilitate Growth: We offer practical feedback tools and protocols to help educators observe, analyze, and enhance their teaching.
- Develop Innovative Resources: We create resources, such as our SOAR mathematics tools and Accountable Talk guide, to support targeted instruction and rich classroom discourse.
- Foster Sustainable Change: We use the principles of improvement science to help schools and districts implement research-based practices in ways that lead to lasting positive impact on student outcomes.
More Than Just Research
While our work is firmly grounded in learning science, we are deeply committed to its practical application. We partner with schools and districts, working side-by-side with educators to understand their unique contexts and challenges. This collaborative approach allows us to translate complex research findings into actionable strategies that help educators make a real difference in the lives of students.
