Eligibility
Access is available to faculty, doctoral students, and qualified researchers affiliated with universities, research institutions, government agencies, and other organizations. Projects must demonstrate potential to benefit the Census Bureau’s mission and federal statistical system. See the Policies & Procedures page for information on access procedures and fees.
Proposals and Data Access
Access to the confidential data contained within the FSRDC system is controlled through a proposal review process that is jointly managed by the Census Bureau and the relevant cooperating federal agencies. Potential researchers gain access to these data through the following process:
1. Review the resources identified on the Available Data Page [active link to page] to identify data products relevant to your research.
2. Schedule an initial consultation with the Pittsburgh FSRDC Administrator [active link to FSRDC email address] to assess the feasibility of the proposed research project.
3. Prepare a research proposal in collaboration with the Administrator. This proposal must follow Census Bureau guidelines as well as the guidelines of cooperating agencies where appropriate.
4. Submit the proposal for formal Census Bureau review.
5. Once approved, complete required security training and obtain Special Sworn Status.
6. Schedule time to work at the Pittsburgh FSRDC facility.
The proposal and data access process can take 6-12 months, so researchers are encouraged to begin the process well in advance of the desired start date.
Research Community
Researchers at the Pittsburgh FSRDC study a wide range of topics, including labor markets, health outcomes, educational attainment, business dynamics, and demographic change. The center fosters collaboration across Pitt, CMU, and the broader regional academic community.
Training & Events
The Pittsburgh FSRDC regularly delivers workshops and seminars to introduce researchers to available datasets, the proposal process, and disclosure requirements. If your department, College, or University is interested in hosting an informational workshop, please contact the Administrator or one of the Co-Directors.
